The Rainbow Film Festival is back this month with three exciting films!
Friday 18 October - Knock Out Blonde: the Kellie Maloney story.
As the boxing manager who led Lennox Lewis to championship glory, Kellie Maloney was no stranger to the spotlight. However, her greatest fight was yet to come, when in 2014 she announced to the world that she was undertaking gender reassignment surgery.
This authorised documentary follows Kellie’s remarkable journey from denial to truth, examining her personal and professional struggles, and how self-acceptance has changed her life for good. Includes a post film Q&A with Kellie Maloney. 8pm at the Old Market Hall. Book here.
Saturday 19 October - Chuck Chuck Baby.
In this British musical romance set in a chicken factory in North Wales, Helen, a reserved woman, rekindles a youthful passion with Joanne, her adolescent crush. Amidst love, loss, and music, they navigate personal demons and the death of a mother-figure, Gwen. 8pm at the Old Market Hall. Book here.
Sunday 20 October - Studio One Forever.
This screening is in memory of Geoff Hardy, founder of the Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival.
In this highly acclaimed documentary, experience the untold story of America’s first gay disco, a kaleidoscopic excursion into LGBTQ+ history through the lens of the groundbreaking club. From 1974 to 1994, Studio One and its adjoining live music venue, The Backlot, became symbols of hope and community for gay men during tumultuous times. Through personal accounts, the documentary delves into Studio One’s story against the backdrop of a progressing gay liberation clashing with 80s conservatism and the escalating AIDS nightmare. It’s a testament to an era, immortalising the club’s legacy for future generations. 7pm at the Old Market Hall. Book here.
SAND Shrewsbury has been the base for the ground breaking project into ageing and how that can impact LGBT+ people: for example a pressure to go back into the closet as we become more dependent on others. SAND (Safe Ageing, No Discrimination) was the brainchild of Sue and Sal and for twelve years they with others (they especially) have raised awareness across the adult care sector in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin that older LGBT+ people exist and their needs taken account of. SAND has now been brought to a close, but several initiatives that it spawned continue (such as the Senior Rainbow Friends who meet monthly), and the thirty something care organisations that have engaged in training and signed the 'Embrace' Covenant continue. Watch their summary of their remarkable twelve year project here.
